VINTON TOWN COUNCIL APPROVES WATER MAIN EXTENSION

Vinton has taken a first step toward extension of the town's sewer main east of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

But an actual extension may be in the distant future.

The action taken by Vinton Town Council this week was to approve a right of way to extend a water main to a planned residential development on the Muse property, a 45-acre tract on the east side of the parkway.

Town Council must approve the right of way because it has an agreement with Roanoke County under which the town supplies water for the eastern area of the county.

Town Manager Clay Goodman told council members that he and other town officials had been working with Roanoke County officials on placement of the right of way so it could be used in the future for a sewer main also.

Goodman said he thinks it is important that the town do what it can now to get sewer access across the Blue Ridge Parkway property because sewer service will become a necessity if urban development continues toward the east.

He pointed out that there are already 211 houses east of the parkway that have septic systems.

In other matters:

Goodman told council that Vinton police cadets have become trash pickup champs.

The cadets bested three other groups and picked up 153 bags of trash during the annual Clean Valley Day campaign March 30.

Others picking up trash were the Midway Gang, 110 bags; Boy Scout Troop #3, 103 bags; and William Byrd Middle School, 30 bags.

The Midway Gang is a group of citizens who live in Vinton's Midway area. The town has sponsored the competition for several years, and this year awarded prizes of $150, $100 and $50 to the top three winners.

Council received a copy of the Roanoke Valley Conceptual Greenway Plan, which was presented by Lucy Ellett, chair of the Greenways Committee.

Ellett said the committee is working toward winning funds to begin creating some of the greenways trails.

She also asked council members to consider contributing $2,400 toward a salary for a full-time director of the greenways program.
