ROANOKER JUST OFF TARGET IN RIFLE TRIALS

Matt Suggs of Roanoke made a strong showing at the U.S. Olympic Trials for shooting on Thursday in Atlanta, but came up just short in his bid to make the U.S. Olympic Team.

Suggs, attempting to make the men's free rifle prone team, finished third in Thursday's final match of the three-day competition. He ended up fifth overall with a score of 1988.6. That was 7.1 points behind the score of winner Eric Uptagrafft of Spokane, Wash., who had a 1995.7.

Suggs actually shot better than Uptagrafft on the last day, as the winner finished seventh in the final round.

Joining Uptagrafft on the Olympic Team will be Bill Meek of Riverside, Calif., who won the final round and finished the three days with a 1992.8.

Meek, an Olympian in 1992, was seventh heading into Thursday's round, but his score of 700.8 out of a possible 709 put him in the field.

BASEBALL Barker powers Hokies past Liberty 8-6

Kevin Barker went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored as Virginia Tech knocked off Liberty 8-6 in Lynchburg.

The Hokies (16-12) also got solo home runs from former William Byrd standouts Josh Herman and Matt Reynolds. Britt Stoudenmire (1-0) got the win with two innings of one-hit relief and Charlie Gillian picked up his seventh save.

Ryan Rowedder was 2-for-2 with two RBI for Liberty (14-10).

* Brent Payton's leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth inning helped Appalachian State win its ninth straight game, 6-5 over Radford in Boone, N.C.

Radford (8-18) led 5-3 in the eighth after Kelly Dampeer (Northside) singled and Chris Carr followed with an RBI triple, but the Mountaineers (20-11) scored two in the eighth to tie the score at 5, setting up Payton's heroics.

Dampeer finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Carr was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI

SOFTBALL Ferrum's Sutphin hurls no-hitter against Hilbert

Roben Sutphin tossed her first career no-hitter and was one walk away from a perfect game as Ferrum knocked off Hilbert 8-0 and 7-6 in a non-conference doubleheader in Ferrum.

Sutphin also set a single-game school record by striking out 10 batters. Kelly Jarrell led Ferrum (13-11) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI in the first game and 2-for-4 with a run and RBI in the second game.

Michelle Francis was the winning pitcher in the second game and went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs. Hilbert is 0-2.

* Sheree' Fletcher tossed a three-hitter as Radford knocked off East Carolina 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader in Radford. The Pirates won the second game 6-3.

Fletcher struck out 11 and Radford (30-20) used Chassity Chronick's RBI single in the second inning for the only run it would need. In the second game, East Carolina (27-18) overcame a 3-0 deficit by scoring six unanswered runs to win.

* Katie Phillips fired a one-hitter and Carrie Rodgers pitched a four-hitter as Liberty swept a doubleheader from Virginia Tech 3-0 and 8-1 in Lynchburg, snapping the Hokies' eight-game winning streak.

Phillips (12-7) allowed a single to Beth Drombetta and walked Melissa Sanderson for the only Hokie runners in the second game. Tina Diamond (4-5) was the loser for Tech (13-15) despite giving up just three earned runs.

Drombetta scored the only Hokie run in the first game as Rodgers (8-3) gave up four hits and one unearned run for Liberty (31-12). Jennie Kallio (4-8) took the loss, allowing just one earned run as the Hokies were victimized by four errors.

* New River Valley Speedway announced the truck race for Saturday night has been postponed and instead the track will be running a MASCAR car race.

``The truck owners feel they need a little more time to get the trucks in racing condition,'' track promoter Ronnie Snoddy said. ``We hope they will be ready to run next week, but we want them [owners] to feel comfortable before we let them run.''

MASCAR is a Winston Cup Mini Car Cup division that has the look of Winston Cup cars. Each car tips the scales at about 600 pounds. It will be the first time that MASCAR has made an appearance at New River Valley Speedway.
