A Roanoke County grand jury indicted a former sheriff's deputy Friday on a charge of stealing a jail inmate's credit card, according to Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Leach.
William G. Lucas Jr. resigned soon after Roanoke County police began investigating allegations by the inmate last fall.
Robert Paul Dallas had received credit card bills that included charges for fishing equipment, toiletries and other items that totaled more than $900. He was in jail at the time the purchases were made.
The credit card had been taken from the jail's property room. Purchases were made in Roanoke and Franklin County, according to authorities.
Earlier this year, Dallas was convicted of 24 counts of sexual molestation.
On Friday, the grand jury also indicted Christopher James Saul, 19, on capital murder and robbery charges in connection with the beating death of a car mechanic.
Christopher Lee Wilson, 26, was found dead by employees at General Imports Sales & Service on Brambleton Avenue shortly after the New Year's holiday.
Saul told an informant that he hit Wilson on the head with some type of bar to get the victim's car, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in Roanoke Circuit Court.
His trial is scheduled to begin June 24, Leach said.
