A Bedford County grand jury indicted a county man Friday on a charge of trying to hire someone to kill his estranged wife's male roommate.
Jeffrey Neal Martin, 33, of Forest was indicted on two counts of solicitation to commit a felony. Each charge carries a punishment of one to five years in prison.
Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz said Martin offered $1,000 to two men on separate occasions last year if they would kill or find someone to kill Elmer Eugene Jarrell, who was living in Moneta with Tammy Sue Martin.
Krantz would not give the names of the two men but said they were friends of Tammy Martin's. Jeffrey Martin apparently thought his wife and Jarrell were romantically involved, Krantz said, but she has denied it.
Jeffrey Martin is free on bond. He, his wife and Jarrell could not be reached for comment.
In another indictment handed down Friday, an Amherst County man was indicted on a rape charge.
Clayton Hampton Taliaferro, 31, of Madison Heights is charged with raping a Bedford County woman last year in a county home in the Forest area.
