THE DOG WHO LOVED TOO MUCH. By Nicholas H. Dodman. Bantam Books. $22.95.
This interesting book examines abnormal behavior exhibited by dogs in modern society - an environment that has changed faster than natural selection has changed animal behavior.
As a professor in pharmacology at Tufts University, Dodman brings a perspective not usually found in popular animal literature, and he raises the idea that drugs other than aloe and garlic may help animals adapt to this strange, new world. He discusses problems from rage syndrome to fear of thunder to selective incontinence and describes breeds from dachshunds to springer spaniels to common mixed breeds whose links to wild times past conflict with this modern, sterile (at least to dogs) world. Using simple behavior modification techniques and drugs where needed, man's best friends can be moved from lives of conflict to lives of acceptance and joy.
Larry Shield trains horses and dogs in Franklin County.
