PARISH SETS RECORD IN VICTORY

Robert Parish broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's NBA career record for games played, and the Charlotte Hornets boosted their playoff chances with a 93-89 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night in Cleveland.

Larry Johnson and Kenny Anderson each scored 20 points as the Hornets moved a half-game ahead of Miami for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Heat lost 99-95 at Indiana.

Parish, who played in his 1,561st game in his 20th season, scored four of Charlotte's first six points on a short jump shot and a dunk. Then, with 9:48 left in the first quarter and during the first stoppage of play, referee Tommy Nunez presented Parish with the game ball.

The sellout crowd joined both teams in a 90-second standing ovation for Parish, an eight-time All-Star who played on three championship teams with the Boston Celtics.

Parish, 43, played 39 minutes and scored 14 points on 6-of-9 field-goal shooting. He had nine rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.

Note

STACKHOUSE DONE FOR SEASON: Philadelphia 76ers rookie Jerry Stackhouse will miss the last eight games of the regular season because of a fractured right thumb.

The Sixers forward suffered the injury late in Friday night's 108-87 loss to Detroit. The thumb on Stackhouse's shooting hand is in a cast and he is expected to need six to eight weeks to recover, the team announced.
