DEFENSE KEYS HOKIE SCRIMMAGE

All-America end Cornell Brown and tackle Brad Baylor led the Virginia Tech defense as it recorded 14 sacks for 87 yards in losses in a controlled scrimmage Saturday in Blacksburg.

Brown had 12 tackles, including three sacks, while Baylor made 11 tackles and two sacks.

On offense, split end Michael Steuwe caught four passes for 64 yards. Flanker Shawn Scales rushed twice for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Tech will conclude spring practice with the annual Maroon-White game at Lane Stadium on April 20 at 3 p.m.

In other football:

Virginia quarterbacks Tim Sherman and Aaron Brooks combined to throw for 490 yards and five touchdowns, and tailback Tiki Barber (Cave Spring) rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown to highlight a spring football scrimmage in Charlottesville.

Sherman completed 19 of 27 for 324 yards and four touchdowns and Brooks was 16-of-29 for 166 yards and a touchdown. Germane Crowell caught five passes for 95 yards and three touchdowns.

LACROSSE UNC nips Cavaliers 19-18

The University of Virginia came up short with a fourth-quarter rally as the Cavaliers lost an Atlantic Coast Conference men's lacrosse game to the University of North Carolina 19-18 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The top-ranked Cavaliers (6-2 overall, 0-2 conference) lost their second straight game.

Doug Knight had five goals and an assist and Michael Watson added four goals and an assist. Tim Whitely led all players with seven assists.

John Ripley scored six goals to lead VMI past Radford 17-15 in a men's game in Radford.

Joe Brockman added four goals and two assists for the Keydets (5-3). Zach Karantonis had seven goals and three assists to lead the Highlanders (4-5).

Billy Metz scored four goals and had two assists to lead the Roanoke men's lacrosse team to a 21-10 win over Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C.

Tim Fleming added three goals and three assists and Keith Wempe scored three times and assisted on another goal for the Maroons (6-2).

Roanoke scored 12 unassisted goals in the third period to take an 18-3 lead over Greensboro (3-3).

Virginia Tech used a balanced scoring attack featuring Suzy Funston's four goals to handle American University 18-5 in women's lacrosse at Tech Park.

BASEBALL Tech earns split with Dayton

Virginia Tech and the University of Dayton split an Atlantic 10 doubleheader in Dayton, Ohio, with Dayton winning the first game 4-3 and the Hokies taking the nightcap 5-3.

The Hokies (17-13 overall, 4-2 conference) got a strong performance from Jon Hand in the second game. Hand went six innings, striking out four and walking none. Charlie Gillian picked up his eighth save of the year.

In the first game, Brian Fitzgerald went the distance and took the loss.

Josh Herman (William Byrd) was a combined 4-for-6 on the afternoon with four RBI, including a three-run homer. Matt Reynolds (William Byrd) had three hits on the day.

VMI had problems with The Citadel's hitting in one game and its pitching in the next as the Keydets lost a Southern Conference doubleheader in Lexington.

In game one, the Bulldogs (22-20 overall, 9-8 conference) pounded out 13 hits and 14 runs in a 14-4 win. Hank Morgan was the bright spot for the Keydets (10-24, 3-14), collecting two hits, a run and an RBI.

In game two, Louie Napoleon had two of the Keydets' three hits in a 5-1 loss.

Radford sophomore Jason Anderson (Glenvar) allowed no earned runs over 62/3 innings and Radford picked the potential tying run off third for the final out as the Highlanders gained a split of a Big South Conference doubleheader with a 2-1 over Coastal Carolina in the second game of a doubleheader in Radford. The Chanticleers won the first game 18-13.

Anderson allowed one unearned run and seven hits before giving way to Matt Cooke with two outs in the seventh. Cooke earned his second save.

In game one, Kelly Dampeer (Northside) went 4-for-5, including a double, triple, four RBI and three runs scored for the Highlanders (9-19 overall, 3-5 conference). Radford scored 11 runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Chanticleers (14-20, 3-2) had eight players with hits, four with two hits each.

SOFTBALL Ferrum wins one of three

Ferrum won one game and lost two on the first day of play in the fifth annual Ferrum Invitational at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.

Ferrum lost its first game to Frostburg State 6-2, won its next game against SUNY-New Paltz 10-2 and lost its last game to Ursinus 1-0.

The Panthers (14-13) will play Methodist at 9 a.m. today. The winner advances to play Ursinus at 11 a.m.

Virginia Tech dropped both games of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader to the University of Massachusetts 10-1 and 16-0 in Blacksburg.

In the first game, the Hokies (13-17 overall, 6-2 conference) managed only three hits off UMass starter Dani Ortega. Jennie Kallio (Cave Spring) went the distance, giving up only one earned run for Tech.

In the second game, Tech got only three hits. The Hokies committed 11 errors in two games. UMass (19-10, 2-0) scored 26 runs on the afternoon on 19 hits.

Jarrett fires 77 in first round

Jacob Jarrett of Roanoke shot a 77 in the first round of the Taylor Made PineIsle Junior Classic at Lake Lanier Islands, Ga.

Charles Howell of Augusta, Ga., shot a 68 to grab a one-stroke lead in the event played on the par-71, 6,403-yard Renaissance PineIsle Resort course.

In the girls' division, Joannah Pattison of Wytheville shot an 82 and is seven strokes behind three golfers who carded 75s.

Roanoke's Renae Rose won the 100-meter dash in 13.6 seconds in the 4th Annual Lynchburg College Track Classic at Shellenberger Field in Lynchburg.

Michelle Smith of Virginia Tech placed second in the discus with a throw of 141' 11" at the 34th annual Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.

Eddie Boes finished third in the discus with a throw of 147 feet.
