POET/ACTRESS/PLAYWRIGHT PERFORMS SUNDAY IN EMORY

Poet, actress and playwright Billie Jean Young will present a one-woman dramatization at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at Emory & Henry College on the life of civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer.

Hamer, born in 1917 as the 20th child of a sharecropping Mississippi family, became involved with the civil rights movement in 1962.

Two years later, she spoke at the National Democratic Convention representing the independent Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.

Young, who is also an assistant professor of speech and drama at Jackson State University, appeared in the 1988 film "Mississippi Burning" and the 1990 NBC movie "Blue Bayou."

She has performed her show on Hamer for 10 years.
