Chuck Smith and Alex Portillo combined on a four-hit shutout as Prince William silenced Salem 6-0 on Sunday in a Carolina League baseball game.
Smith (1-0) allowed three hits in six innings, and Portillo slammed the door, picking up the save by allowing only one hit in the last three innings.
Brandon Moore slapped a two-run single in the bottom the second to provide all the offense the Cannons (2-1) needed. Moore had three RBI on two hits.
Cannons leadoff man Sandy McKinnon paced Prince William's 16-hit attack, going 4-for-5.
The only bright spot for the Avalanche was its four pickoffs of would-be Cannons base stealers. Prince William was 3-for-7 on stolen-base attempts.
Salem starter Doug Million (0-1) was saddled with the loss, giving up seven hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings. Reliever Brian Rose was pounded for six hits and four runs in two innings of work.
The Avalanche (1-2) lost two of its three games in its season-opening series with the Cannons and returns home to Salem Memorial Stadium for a series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks, beginning tonight at 7 p.m. see microfilm for box score
