HOKIES EARN A-10 SWEEP IN BASEBALL

Virginia Tech swept an Atlantic 10 baseball doubleheader from the University of Dayton 8-7 and 7-6 on Sunday in Dayton, Ohio.

In game one, the Hokies (19-13 overall, 6-2 conference) scored two runs in the top of the 11th inning to win. The scheduled seven-inning game was pushed into extra innings on David Fitt's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to tie the score at two. Chad Foutz (Franklin County) went 3-for-6 with an RBI and Fitt was 2-for-5 with three RBI.

In game two, the Flyers (12-19, 1-7) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings but the Hokies came back to tie with five runs of their own in the third and fourth innings. The Hokies scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead and held on. Josh Herman (William Byrd) collected two hits and two RBI in the win.

In other sports news:

VMI avoided the three-game sweep by The Citadel by pounding out 13 hits and defeating the Bulldogs 13-5 in a Southern Conference baseball game in Lexington.

The Keydets (11-24 overall, 4-14 conference) trailed the Bulldogs (22-21, 9-9) 1-0 going into their half of the fourth. VMI promptly sent 13 men to the plate and tallied 10 runs with Nate Shepperson and Scott Thompkins hit home runs in the inning. Shepperson later hit another two-run homer.

Shane Reed had four hits and Rob McCandless drove in three runs as Radford claimed a 10-5 Big South Conference baseball victory over Coastal Carolina at Dedmon Center Park.

The Highlanders (10-19 overall, 4-5 conference) collected 14 hits. Coastal Carolina (14-21, 4-3) jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the second, but Radford answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Highlanders then went on to score eight runs over the next five innings to put the game away.

Ferrum dropped a 7-3 decision to ninth-ranked North Carolina-Wesleyan in a Dixie Conference baseball game in Rocky Mount, N.C.

The Panthers (20-4-1 overall, 6-2 conference) were led by Luther Hedley, who went 2-for-2 with a solo home run. North Carolina-Wesleyan is 20-8, 5-3.

Rhode Island swept Virginia Tech in an Atlantic 10 softball doubleheader 7-2 and 7-4 in Blacksburg.

In the first game, Jennie Kallio (Cave Spring) allowed four earned runs and eight hits over seven innings to take the loss. Sarah Hudson (William Byrd) and Christine Trunnell collected RBI singles.

In the second game, the Hokies (13-19 overall, 6-4 conference) scored four runs on five hits, including Terri Garland's two-run double. They scored the other two off an error and a walk.

The Rams are 10-14, 2-0.

Jacob Jarrett of Roanoke finished 63rd at the Taylor Made Pineisle Junior Golf Classic held at the par-71 Renaissance Pinelsle Resort in Lake Lanier Islands, Ga.

Jarrett shot a final round 80 to go with a first round 77. Charles Howell of Augusta, Ga., shot a two-round 141 to win the event.

On the girls' side, Joannah Pattison of Wytheville finished with a 170 to come in 22nd. Pattison shot an 82 in the first round and an 88 in the final round.

Chris Pohowsky of Blacksburg finished seventh in the expert division of the Babcock Spring Classic mountain bike race held in Babcock, W.Va.

In the men's sport division, Dave Reimer was 23rd, followed by Wes Vest in 24th. All riders rode for the East Coasters/Back Streets team.
