Montgomery County Democrats will hold their first-ever "firehouse primary" Saturday to select delegates for congressional and state party conventions this spring.
The less-formal "firehouse" caucus format is designed to encourage participation, party leaders say. Unlike past years, when participants had to be at the caucus by the starting time and stay for the duration, this year the doors will be open from noon to 3 p.m. and members can vote and leave any time during that three-hour period. Moreover, for those who cannot make Saturday's caucus, the party will take votes from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. On both days, the voting will be held at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
All county residents who support Democratic candidates and are registered to vote in Montgomery County will be eligible to participate. Ballots will list the candidates for delegate with their preferences for president, U.S. senator and representative. Mark Warner and Leslie Byrne are vying for the Senate nomination.
