Marshall on Monday hired as its men's basketball coach University of Charleston coach Greg White, a one-time West Virginia prep standout and a former Thundering Herd point guard and assistant.
The announcement came after several other candidates in the past two weeks dropped out of the running to replace Billy Donovan.
White, with an overall record of 119-154 at Pikeville (Ky.) College and UC schools, is Marshall's fourth coach in seven seasons, a stretch in which the program has struggled after dominating the Southern Conference during the 1980s.
``We looked in all directions to find a proper match ... We were looking for someone with a commitment to stay here,'' said athletic director Lee Moon, a Roanoke native.
``I'm from West Virginia, I played here at Marshall,'' White said. ``This is just a dream job for me. I've worked for this for 14 years.''
Clemson assistant Larry Shyatt and VMI head coach Bart Bellairs last weekend withdrew from consideration. Indiana assistant Dan Dakich and former North Carolina State coach Les Robinson earlier pulled out of the picture.
Head coach at NCAA Division II Charleston since 1990, White was the state's prep player of the year in 1977 and an all-SC point guard for Marshall from 1977 through 1981.
He holds Herd career (701) and single-game (18) records for assists and was inducted into the Marshall Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
