ROANOKE TIMES Copyright (c) 1996, Roanoke Times DATE: Tuesday, April 9, 1996 TAG: 9604090110 SECTION: VIRGINIA PAGE: C-3 EDITION: METRO SOURCE: BETTY HAYDEN STAFF WRITER MEMO: ***CORRECTION*** Published correction ran on April 10, 1996. A story in Monday's Virginia section about a cattle truck accident should have said a majority of the cattle headed behind Hollins Motel in Cloverdale. The story referred to the wrong motel. NOTE: Story ran Tuesday.
One cow was still roaming southern Botetourt County on Monday night after an accident on U.S. 11 near the Roanoke-Hollins Stock Yard.
The cow and 25 others were being hauled to Lexington after being bought at the weekly stock sale.
Perry Johnson Huffman, 34, was driving a cattle truck north on U.S. 11 when a sport/utility vehicle pulled from the Botetourt Fitness parking lot into his path, Virginia State Trooper M.D. Austin said.
Huffman's truck struck the other vehicle on the driver's side and then turned on its side.
Huffman was not injured, and the driver of the other vehicle, 27-year-old Paul Thomas Jaminet of Roanoke, received only a minor cut, Austin said.
Jaminet was charged with failure to yield the right of way.
One cow was injured in the collision and had to be put to death.
The 25 other cows took off in two directions, state police said. Most of the herd headed behind the Travelodge Motel in Cloverdale.
Austin said he, another trooper and some Botetourt County sheriff's deputies chased the cattle for about a half-mile before corralling them in a farmer's pasture.
The farmer agreed to put the stranded cattle up for the night, he said.
While police chased the largest group of cattle, about four others headed north on U.S. 11 toward Troutville.
Three were rounded up, but the spur-of-the-moment cowboys gave up with one cow still on the loose after midnight.
