Thermastructure Ltd. in Radford has donated a house made from Thermastructure panels to flood victims in West Virginia.

The house was donated to a family in Marlington, W.Va., and a crew from Thermastructure helped erect it.

Thermastructure's houses use composite materials that combine structural framing, insulation, sheathing and vapor barrier.

The Humane Society of Montgomery County has paid off the mortgage on its shelter, 3 1/2 years after it opened. A recent fund-raising drive netted $21,000 in small donations and an anonymous $50,000 donation.

Charles G. Tarasidis, a pharmacist in Radford, was selected the 1995 "Unsung Hero of the Program for Special Medical Care" in the volunteer category from the Virginia Health Care Foundation.

Tarasidis was selected for his efforts to reduce medication expenses while still providing quality care to patients.

The Montgomery County Kiwanis Club and the students at Riner, Margaret Beeks, Kipps and Gilbert Linkous Elementary schools recently collected 850 used children's books to be donated to the "Moms at Risk" program, sponsored by the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library.

Les Pugh of Floyd County has been recognized for his outstanding service and leadership on the New River Valley Workshop Board of Directors. He is serving a second term on the board and was chairman in 1995.

Officers this year are: Dr. John W. Dickey of Blacksburg, president; Barbara M. Stafford of Pearisburg, vice president; and Patrick K. Moore of Radford, secretary/treasurer. Other members are Richard G. Ballengee, Hiawatha Nicely Jr., Paul W. Steele, Leslie C. Pugh and first-term member Jeffrey L. Irby.

Retiring from the board after two three-year terms is Dale V. Clark.

Students at Margaret Beeks Elementary School raised $2,860 in their recent Jump Rope for Heart year. More than 125 students participated, and the fund-raising event was highlighted by appearances by members of the Virginia Tech football team, volleyball team, cheerleaders and the Hokie Bird, as well as area radio personalities.
