ARM SURGERY PUTS BARBER ON THE SHELF

Ronde Barber, Virginia's All-ACC cornerback from Cave Spring High School, will miss the rest of spring practice after undergoing arm surgery Tuesday.

Barber suffered a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament and ruptured pronator teras (inside of the elbow) muscle in his right arm. He was injured in practice Tuesday while making a tackle during a scrimmage.

Barber will not have full use of the arm for three months, but is expected to recover in time for preseason drills in August. UVa coach George Welsh said the rising junior and two-time All-ACC defensive back was injured when his arm was extended and his hand was in bracing position on the ground.

Roanoke's Shannon Taylor, a redshirt freshman linebacker from Patrick Henry High School, was on the field when the injury occurred. He said Barber made the stop on the play and when other defenders ``continued their pursuit, like we're taught, [defensive lineman] Todd White fell on the back of Ronde's arm. It was kind of a freak thing.''

In other spring football news, Welsh said the competition between Tim Sherman and Aaron Brooks for Virginia's starting quarterback job will carry over into the summer, and maybe into the regular season.

``I'm happy with the quarterback situation right now, either one,'' Welsh said.

In the first of two spring scrimmages, Sherman threw for 324 yards and four touchdowns, and Brooks passed for 166 yards and one TD. Sherman also ran for a TD and threw one interception. Brooks threw two.

Sherman, a senior from Charlottesville and the son of Virginia wide receivers coach Tom Sherman, completed 11 of 17 passes in six games backing up Mike Groh last season, including the first two touchdown passes of his career.
