Young Artists' Awards
Cave Spring High School senior Kate Nettles won first place at the 14th annual Young Artists' Awards Competition March 31 at Hollins College.
Nettles won $250 for her performance of ``Troisieme Solo de Clarinet" by Charles Colin.
Second place and $150 went to violinist Ashley Kunz, a seventh-grade home schooler from Forest. Ashley performed the third movement of Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto in E minor."
Third-place honors and $100 went to violinist Stephen Meyer of Lynchburg for his performance of Pablo de Sarasate's ``Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs)." Stephen is a seventh-grade student at Linkhorne Middle School.
Christiansburg High School 10th grader Timothy Nelson received an honorable mention for his performance of his own piano composition, "Mockba."
Ballet troupe competes
Thirteen members of The Southwest Virginia Ballet Co. will perform at the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association's annual festival in Knoxville, Tenn., from April 17-21.
The Senior Company will perform ``Concerto,'' a contemporary ballet danced en pointe to the music of Gershwin's ``Concerto for Piano and Orchestra.'' It was created for the Southwest Virginia Ballet by guest choreographer Juan Valqui.
Company members range in age from 13 to 18 and are from Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Radford and Peterstown, W.Va.
Brubeck son in concert
EMORY - A musical trio including the son of jazz musician Dave Brubeck will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 17 in the Emory & Henry College Memorial Chapel. Admission is free.
Chris Brubeck will appear with Bill Crofut, with whom he began touring at age 17. They will be joined by guitarist Joel Brown to perform the music of Scott Joplin, Dave Brubeck, Woody Guthrie and Fats Waller as well as their own compositions.
Their latest audio release, "Red, White and Blues," is a recording of one of their live performances.
