TYSON STUCK IN OHIO AFTER INVESTIGATION IN SPORTS

Mike Tyson, on probation for a 1992 rape conviction, was restricted Thursday to his home state of Ohio while police investigated a complaint he sexually assaulted a woman at a Chicago nightclub.

Tyson could be ordered back to prison if he is found to have violated the terms of his release.

During the investigation in Chicago, Tyson may leave Ohio only for emergencies or for other reasons approved in advance, said George Walker, chief probation officer for Marion County.

``He's stuck in Ohio,'' Walker said Thursday of the 29-year-old WBC heavyweight champion. ``If he wanted to go to New Jersey for a sightseeing tour, we would probably say no. If he wanted to go to Hawaii for vacation we would probably say no. We will probably be keeping very, very close watch on him.

``We're just going to have him sit tight in Ohio for 30 to 60 days."

Tyson won the WBC title last month against Frank Bruno. His next fight is scheduled for July 13 in Las Vegas against WBA champion Bruce Seldon.

If the travel restrictions are still in place then, Walker said Tyson would likely be allowed to leave Ohio for the match because the trip would be work-related.

Red Wings close in on NHL victory mark

The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night became just the second NHL team ever to win 60 games in a season, matching the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens with a 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

The Red Wings have two games remaining. They host the Blackhawks in a rematch of Sunday's brawl in Chicago and finish the regular season Sunday at Dallas.

* The Buffalo Sabres' new black, red and silver uniforms were unveiled to a full house at Memorial Auditorium.

The organization since December 1994 had planned to ditch the blue and gold threads worn since the team was founded in 1970.

The old crest with a stampeding buffalo above crossed sabres has been abandoned for the head of a red-eyed buffalo casting an angry, sidelong glance. On each shoulder, a scarlet ``B'' is impaled by a sword.

* Marianne Stanley was hired to turn around the struggling women's program at California.

Stanley, 41, coached Old Dominion to three national titles in the 1970s and 1980s and was a co-head coach of the Stanford team that reached the NCAA tournament Final Four this season.
