Former Connecticut Gov. Lowell P. Weicker Jr., a Republican-turned-independent who gained fame as a fierce critic of the Nixon White House during Watergate, will not run for president in 1996, a Weicker adviser said Thursday.
"It was a personal decision," said Thomas D'Amore jr., chairman of The Doyle Group, a political consulting firm in Hartford, Conn., and Washington.
"he indicated that he just didn't want to give up control of his life," said D'Amore , who spoke Thursday with Weicker. "He spent 30 years in politics."
