Choral concert

RADFORD - Radford University's choral ensembles will present a concert featuring Carl Orff's cantata, Carmina Burana, Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Preston Auditorium. David Otis Castonguay will direct the 130 singers.

Castonguay said Carmina Burana is one of the most popular choral and orchestral works. The music has been used in movie soundtracks, including "Excaliber," and even in a Nescafe commercial. "Carmina Burana" literally means "songs of Beuren" and first appeared as a series of poems celebrating spring, love, drinking, the joys of life and the despair of ill fate in an early 13th century German manuscript from the Benedictine abbey of Benediktbeuern.

A small children's choir part will be sung by members of Voices in Harmony, the university's children's choir directed by Betty Turner.

Admission Tuesday is $3 for adults, $1 for children and free with Radford University identification. Tickets will be available at the door.

Sunday's performance will be by Joe Ball at 9:45 a.m. He will play Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor and other selections.

Wednesday James Bryant will perform at Bach's Lunch at noon in Virginia Tech's War Memorial Chapel.

April 23's performance will be a student recital by Carter Edmondson at 4 p.m. in Preston Auditorium at Radford University.

All of the events are free.
