NRVS OPENS WITH DOUBLE POINTS RACE

The New River Valley Speedway will open its 1996 racing season tonight in Radford with the FM 94/Ginger's Jewelry 200. The race will be a double points race.

There also will be an Enduro race (100 laps or one hour, which ever comes first) featuring Shelby Cundiff, a female driver who will be racing among an all-male field.

There also will be foot races for children beginning at 7 p.m. The first 25 children registered in each age division will participate.

In other news in the region:

* The University of Virginia football team will hold its annual spring game at Scott Stadium today at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The game will feature the offense against the defense, with the offense scoring the normal way, six points for a touchdown and three for field goals. The defense receives one point for stopping the offense and forcing a punt, three points for forcing a turnover or blocking a kick and six points for returning a fumble recovery or interception for a touchdown.

* Ferrum knocked off Maryville 7-2 and Savannah College of Art & Design 9-3 in a non-conference doubleheader in Maryville, Tenn.

In the first game, Julie Shifflett was 3-for-3 with a homer, triple and two RBI. Andrea Vita also knocked in three runs for the Panthers (18-15).

Kim Harlow went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Michelle Francis knocked in three runs in the second game.

* Butler scored the game's first 10 goals, including a goal with just 10 seconds elapsed, as the Bulldogs downed Radford 19-6 in a men's lacrosse game in Indianapolis.

Butler (7-2) had 13 players score. Radford (5-5) was led by Bay Burch and Corey Fenley, who each scored a pair of goals. Zack Karantonis had a goal and three assists.

* The Radford men's tennis team lost to Coastal Carolina 4-3 in the Big South tournament held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Highlanders had upset Winthrop 4-3 in the first round.

The women's team defeated UNC Asheville 5-1 in the consolation round after losing in the first round 4-3 to UNC Greensboro.

* The Roanoke RiverDawgs soccer team will scrimmage Virginia Tech today and the University of Richmond on Sunday at Green Hill Park. Both scrimmages start at 2 p.m. The USISL franchise will meet Chapel Hill in an April 27 exhibition and opens its league season on May 4 at home against the Jackson (Miss.) Chargers.

* Virginia Tech and Virginia will play the first college baseball game at Salem Memorial Stadium on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

There is no advance ticket sale. Tickets at the gate are $5 for adults and $3 for youths age 12 and under.

* Brian Marsh of Roanoke finished first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.01 at the YMCA Swimming Nationals held in Orlando, Fla.

Marsh also finished sixth in the 100 butterfly. John Smith and Jamie Spradlin each of Roanoke finished ninth and 11th in the 200 IM and 1,650 freestyle, respectively.
