Wythe Arts Council readies Chautauqua
WYTHEVILLE - The 12th annual Wytheville Chautauqua Festival is still two months away, but the Wythe Arts Council is preparing for it.
More than 40 committees are being set up to provide day and evening activities June 15-23 centering on Wytheville's downtown Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park. Activities will include arts and crafts on display and for sale, live entertainment nightly, children's activities, hot-air ballooning, antiques, food and more.
The Wythe Arts Council has 17 members, each of whom serves as liaison to several committees. The festival draws on volunteers at all levels for its free programming. Further information is available by calling 228-6855.
Judges give 'excellent' to 3 student voices
BLACKSBURG - Melissa Sumner of Christiansburg is one of three Emory & Henry College students earning an "excellent" rating from professional voice teachers judging a recent singing for evaluation for the Virginia chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
The judging was held during the chapter's spring conference at Virginia Tech. The other students were Brandy Burnette, Church Hill, Tenn., and Suzanne Beets, Morristown, Tenn. Sumner is a senior at Emory & Henry.
2 to join Wythe Co. Sports Hall of Fame
WYTHEVILLE - Two former athletes will be inducted into the Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame this fall, bringing the number of honorees to 53.
Roy L. Miller and Paul Moore will be added at a reception following this fall's football game between George Wythe and Rural Retreat High Schools. Wytheville Office Supply and WYVE radio are the sponsors.
Miller starred in football at the Wytheville Training School, graduating as class valedictorian in 1948. He received a scholarship to play college football at Virginia State. Now retired, he remains active in the community.
One of his two children is Roy Stanley, who reports sports news on WDBJ-TV.
Moore played baseball, basketball and football at Fort Chiswell High School during the mid-1970s. He was named Mountain Empire District Player of the Year for baseball as a senior. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played for two years, until an arm injury cut short his career.
At Fort Chiswell he made All-County, All-District and All-Region C All-Star teams. In football, he was named all-state quarterback as a senior. He is still active in youth sports, serving for two years as commissioner of the Fort Chiswell sandlot football program, officiating sandlot football for eight years, and currently coaching the Wythe County Stars girls 13-and-under basketball.
Taxpayer association sets forums
WYTHEVILLE - Seven community forums on zoning have been scheduled by the Wythe County Taxpayers Association, which opposes a zoning ordinance in the county.
The first forums will be Friday at Speedwell Elementary School and Saturday at Rural Retreat High School. The others are April 22, George Wythe High; April 23, at Frank Johnson's residence in Piney; April 25, Austinville Elementary; April 26, Barren Springs Fire Department, and April 27, Fort Chiswell High School.
