PARKER GETS 2 TDS IN TECH GAME

Tailback Marcus Parker scored two touchdowns and linebacker Myron Newsome led the defensive charge in Virginia Tech's football scrimmage in Blacksburg on Saturday.

Parker (Salem High School), who was shifted from fullback this spring, scored on runs of six and one yards.

Quarterback Jim Druckenmiller scored the other touchdown on a four-yard run. Druckenmiller completed 8 of 16 passes for 73 yards, and his backup, Al Clark, was 11-of-21 for 103 yards.

Newsome finished with seven tackles.

Tech concludes spring practice next Saturday with the Maroon-White game at Lane Stadium at 3 p.m.

BASEBALL Hokies sweep Duquesne

Virginia Tech swept an Atlantic 10 doubleheader from Duquesne at English Field, 15-7 and 4-3.

In game one, David Fitt and Kevin Barker combined for seven RBI as Tech (21-16, 8-2) blasted the Dukes (8-18, 2-8). Fitt and Barker finished with two hits each. Senior Sean Hummel went the distance, striking out four and walking one.

In game two, Chad Foutz (Franklin County) hit a solo home run in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Matt Reynolds (William Byrd) drove in two runs with a two-out single in the sixth. Brian Fitzgerald got the win and Charlie Gillian picked up his ninth save.

* Radford split a Big South Conference doubleheader with UNC Asheville at Dedmon Center Park in Radford.

In game one, the Highlanders (13-20, 5-6) belted five home runs to claim an 8-6 victory. Chris Carr (William Byrd) had a solo home run in the win.

In game two, the Bulldogs (16-20, 4-6) jumped out to a 7-2 lead and held on for the 7-6 victory. The Highlanders made it interesting by pushing three runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Eric Hungate was 4-for-4 with five RBI in the game.

* Davidson used the power of four home runs and the pitching of Jonathan Coulombe as it defeated VMI in a Southern Conference matchup 11-3 at Patchin Field in Lexington.

Nate Shepperson hit his 11th homer of the season and had two RBI for the Keydets (11-25, 4-15). Coulombe went the distance, giving up nine hits, striking out seven and walking none for the Wildcats (12-25, 5-14).

* Ferrum couldn't take advantage of a strong performance by starter Jimmy Hamilton as it fell to top-ranked Methodist (N.C.) 3-0 in a Dixie Conference game at Adams Field in Ferrum.

Hamilton tossed a complete game six-hitter, allowing one earned run, striking out eight and walking two. Five different players collected five hits for the Panthers (23-5-1, 6-3). Tim Adkins ran his record to 7-0 for the Monarchs (24-4, 11-0). Hamilton fell to 8-1.

GOLF Tech men lead A-10 tourney

The Virginia Tech men's golf team fired a tournament record 3-under-par 285 in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament in Pittsburgh. The tournament consists of two rounds of 27 holes.

Tech's Sean Farrell and Chip Glover each shot 2-under-par 106 to share the lead after the first round. Robby Rasmussen and Curtis Deal were two strokes off the pace and David Haven was four strokes back.

* Ferrum's men's golf team is in second place, three strokes off Longwood's 307 pace, after the first round of the Virginia State Division II-III Golf Championship on the par-72 Stoney Creek Golf Course in Wintergreen.

R.J. Weaver and Ed Alvarez of Ferrum both shot an opening-round 76 and trail by one stroke.

LACROSSE Cavs upend Blue Devils

Third-ranked Virginia got back on the winning track with a 16-10 victory over 13th-ranked Duke in men's Atlantic Coast Conference lacrosse action in Durham, N.C.

Michael Watson led all players with six points on five goals and an assist for the Cavaliers (8-2, 1-2). The Blue Devils (5-5, 1-2) were led by Jim Gonella's two goals and two assists.

* Roanoke College dropped a 17-11 decision to Ohio Wesleyan in men's lacrosse in Delaware, Ohio.

Paul Baly had three goals and two assists and J.D. Gattie added three goals for the Maroons (7-3). Ohio Wesleyan is 8-2.

* Virginia Tech won its second straight women's lacrosse game with a 20-5 victory over Mount St.Mary's at Tech Park. Freshman Suzy Funston led the offensive attack for the Hokies (5-5) with six goals and four assists. Mount St.Mary's is 4-5.

* Roanoke College lost 17-10 to Rowan College in women's lacrosse at Alumni Field. Gayle Avery collected four goals and an assist for the Maroons (7-2). Rowan (2-4) was led by Megan Barlow's four goals.

Ferrum picks up two softball victories

Ferrum notched two non-conference wins against Maryville (Tenn.) and Savannah College of Art and Design in Maryville, Tenn.

Michelle Francis got the win in game one, a 15-2 win over Maryville. Shannon Jost was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored for Ferrum (20-15).

In game two, Roben Sutphin picked up the 12-8 win and was also 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
