AYERS, Wanda Parker, 68, of Moneta, died Friday, April 12, 1996 at her home. She was a native of Botetourt Co. and with her husband owned and operated Ayers TV Service of Roanoke. After retiring, they moved to Smith Moutain Lake. Mrs. Ayers attended Mt. Ivy Baptist Church and was a charter member of Lake Quilters Guild and a member of the Franklin Co. Home Extension Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Edgar Ayers. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Chuck Millard, Hillsborough, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Grover and Linda Ayers, Goodview; granddaughter, Belinda Ayers; two grandsons, Kevin Millard and Chip Millard and wife, Kris; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and George Dillon, Fincastle; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 1 p.m. Monday, April 15, 1996 with Pastor Rick Poland and the Rev. Carl V. Woodie officiating. Burial will be in Godwin Cemetery, Fincastle. The family suggests memorials be made to the Hospice of Franklin Co., 124 Floyd Ave., Rocky Mount, Va. 24151. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel after noon Sunday where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

BEDWELL, Reece Stephen, 56, of Blacksburg, died Friday, April 12, 1996 at Lewis-Gale Hospital. Born in Lillybrook, W.Va., on August 29, 1939. Mr. Bedwell was employed with the Crawford & Company for 22 years. He en joyed working with antiques and was co-owner of the Antique Limited, Christiansburg. He was preceded in death by his father, Reece Stephen Bedwell Sr. and one brother, David Vernon Bedwell. Surviving are his wife, Bee Harris Bedwell; one son, Steve Bedwell; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mack Brown; three grandchildren, Renee Brown, Jada Brown and David Bedwell; mother and stepfather, Oeda and Donald McCoy all of Blacksburg; and numerous aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 15, 1996 at St. Michael Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jacob Mayer officiating. Interment will follow in the Snider Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

BROWN, Nannie Elizabeth Pasley, 84, of Rocky Mount, died Saturday, April 13, 1996 at Elder Care of Franklin Co. Born September 20, 1911 a daughter of the late Samuel R. and Cora English Pasley. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Grover F. Brown; three daughters, Shelby B. Witt, Elene Elizabeth Brown, Janice Lee Brown; one son, Harold Arnett Brown; two brothers, Charlie E. Pasley and Ray L. Pasley. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Christine B. and Sherman A. Cable Sr., Salem, Evelyn B. and Hanel Bowles, Rocky Mount; one son and daughter-in-law, Glenwood (Brownie) and Agnes Brown, Moneta; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Zelda P. and Luther Dillon, Goodview, Ernestine P. and James Hartigan, Moneta, and Ann P. DAVIS, Nelson Joseph, 76, of Route 2, Bedford, died Friday, April 12, 1996. He was born on March 26, 1920, in North Bangor, N.Y., a son of the late Frank Roy and Marcia Estabrook Davis. Mr. Davis was a graduate of Franklin Academy in Malone, N.Y. He received a degree in Agriculture from Cornell University and a Master's Degree in Earth Science from East Texas University. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He taught school most of his life. He is survived by his wife, E. Marie Davis; one daughter, Cynthia Janes of Corvallis, Ore.; two sons, Nelson J. Davis Jr. of Lewisville, Texas, and David A. Davis of Poquoson; a stepdaughter, Lynda E. Hanson of Poquoson; two sisters, Harriet Hutchinson of Somerdale, N.J., and Cynthia Rhode of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one brother, Donald A. Davis of North Bangor, N.Y., and six grandchildren. Friends may call at the home, the corner of 43 North and Centerville Road, from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 1996. DENT, James Thomas Jr., (``Tom""), 79, of Rich Creek. died Friday, April 12, 1996 at the home of his son. Born October 13, 1916 at Powell Mountain in Giles County, Va., he was the son of the late James T. Sr. and Cora Graley Dent. Mr. Dent was retired from the Neely Construction Co., Narrows, Va. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife, Mary Chambers Dent; one son, James ``Sonny"" Dent and his wife, Janice of Ballard, W.Va.; grandchildren, James Kevin Dent of Peterstown, W.Va. and Paula Dent Bowers of Ballard, W.Va.; great-grandchildren, Shane Christopher Bowers and James Cameron Dent; one stepgreat-grandchild, Joshua T. Belcher. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, April 15, 1996 at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown with the Rev. Paul Broyles officiating. FERRELL, Hettie C., 88, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, April 12, 1996. She was a member of Hollins Road Church of the Brethren. Mrs. Ferrell was predeceased by her husband, Harmon T. Ferrell, and a daughter, Evelyn F. Shepherd. Surviving are her daughters, Geraldine F. Aldridge and husband Ferrell, Clara F. Martin and husband Kent, and Phyllis F. Hicks and husband Calvin; sons, Charles W. Ferrell and wife Claudine, Thomas R. Ferrell and wife Barbara, Kenneth W. Ferrell and wife Hazel, and Jim M. Ferrell, all of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. Bruce A. Noffsinger. HARDIN, Helen Swan, 96, of Johnson City, Tenn., died Saturday, April 13, 1996 at the Appalachian Christian Village following a brief illness. Mrs. Hardin was a native of Clarksville, Tenn., and had lived in Roanoke, Va., prior to moving to Johnson City, Tenn., in 1970. She was a daughter of the late Dr. William E. Swan and Camille Nelson Swan. Mrs. Hardin was a retired secretary and had been a genealogist for most of her life. She was a member of First Christian Church, Johnson City, where she also was a member of the Loyal Woman's Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hardin was a member of the John Sevier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Southern Dames, and the Monday Club. Mrs. Hardin was preceded in death by her husband, James Councill Hardin and one brother. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Camille Swan Pilcher, Johnson City, Tenn.; six nieces, Mrs. Camille Wagner, Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Frances Huske, Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Caroline Dott, Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. Margaret Tindall and Mrs. Hariet Barkei both of Kenilworth, N.J., Mrs. Charlotte Clark, Rex, Ga.; three nephews, Rev. William E. Pilcher, Mt. Airy, N.C., George Allan Hardin, Gainesville, Fla. and James D. Hardin, Biloxi, Miss.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. LONG, Bobby Joe, 64, of Blacksburg, died Friday, April 12, 1996 at his home. Born in Montgomery County on October 21, 1931 to the late Maury Richard Sr. and Mary Surface Long. He was a decorated vet eran of the Korean War and a graduate of Danville Community College. Surviving are his wife, Mary Catherine Long; four sons, Bobby Joe Long Jr., James Andrew Long both of Radford, David Scott Long, Blacksburg and Shannon Douglas Long, Goldsboro, N.C.; three sisters, Nannie Fay Long, Etta Elizabeth Long, and Almeta L. Cook; three brothers, Maury Long Jr., James Fredrick Long, and Samuel F. Long; mother-in-law, Marion R. Wheary all of Blacksburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. MAHER, Walter R., 76, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 13, 1996. Formerly of Boston, Mass., and Silver Spring, Md., Mr. Maher was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a former employee of the Department of Commerce (Weather Bureau) and later retired from the Department of Agriculture (Office of Management Services) in Washington, D.C. Recently, he taught parttime at National Business College in Salem. He was an active member of the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, and a member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke. He was predeceased by a daughter, Janet Maher. Surviving are his wife, Angelina Maher; daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Don Jones of Roanoke; grandchildren, Kari, Brian and Lindsey Jones, all of Roanoke, and brothers, Frank and Bill Maher, both of Albany, N.Y. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. John D. Cochran. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 1996, in Arlington National Cemetery. MARSHAK, Ruth Gup, 80, of Sarasota, Fla., died in Champaign, Ill., on Friday, April 12, 1996, of cancer. Mrs. Marshak was born in Rochester, N.Y. After receiving a degree in education from Buffalo State Teacher's College, she taught in area elementary schools until she married Robert E. Marshak, a physicist. The two spent the World War II years at Los Alamos, N.M., where Dr. Marshak participated in the Manhattan Project and Ruth taught. After the war, the Marshaks returned to the University of Rochester, where Robert became Chairman and later Distinguished University Professor. Mrs. Marshak continue to teach, but also served in several volunteer organizations and frequently organized social events for University functions and physics conference. Between 1970 and 1979, the Marshaks lived in New York City, where Robert served as President of the City College of New York. In New York, Mrs. Marshak was a board member of volunteer organizations and played an active role in organizing City College functions. Upon retiring from CCNY, the Marshaks moved to Blacksburg, Va., where Robert was University Distinguished Professor. On Robert's death in 1992, Mrs. Marshak settled in Sarasota. She is survived by a son, Stephen, of Champaign; a daughter, Ann Rothstein of Boston, and four grandchildren, David and Emma Marshak, and Ben and Jessie Rothstein. Contributions in her memory can be made to the Marshak Collection of the University Library at Virginia Tech. Her warmth, hospitality and generosity will always be remembered. MUNDY, Nellie Bostic, 69, of Buc hanan, died Friday, April 12, 1996. She was the widow of Mack Mundy and recently retired from Glad Rags of Buchanan. She was a member of the Women's Auxilliary of the Troutville VFW #1841, the Faithful Rebekah Lodge #58, and Women of the Buchanan Moose Lodge. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Garry M. and Kay Mundy, Roanoke, Bruce W. and Betty Mundy, South Carolina; daughters and son-in-law, Sharon M. Parker, Springwood, Diana M. and Phillip Camper, Buchanan; sister, Madeline Hartsell, Springwood; brother, Walter Earl Bostic, Bluefield, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; special friends, Peggy Jenkins, Connie Davis, Marie Mundy.
