      Published correction ran on April 17, 1996.
         The wrong names were listed for Virginia Tech's winning singles 
      players in the Atlantic 10 Conference men's tennis championships in 
      Monday's paper. Tech's winning singles players were Aaron Marchetti, 
      Marek Pfeil, Andrew Krafft, and Rahul Basole. Also, the name of Tech 
      coach Larsen Bowker was mispelled.


VA. TECH WINS A-10 TENNIS TITLE

Virginia Tech won the Atlantic 10 men's tennis championship over George Washington 6-1 in Blacksburg on Sunday.

The Hokies swept the tournament awards as Larson Bowker won coach of the year, Oliver Mayo was named Outstanding Performer and Aaron Marchetti was chosen Most Outstanding Rookie Performer.

Mayo won 6-2, 7-6 over GW's Yuval Karutsky in No.1 singles to give Tech a 2-0 lead after the Hokies had picked up a point for winning two of the three doubles matches. Other singles winners for Tech were Roni Biron at No.2, Anders Bergkvist at No.3, Scott Lowder at No.5 and Mike Rozofsky at No.6.

BASEBALL VMI splits with Davidson

VMI split a Southern Conference baseball doubleheader with Davidson at Patchin Field in Lexington.

In game one, Franco Martin hit two home runs and drove in three runs to lead the Keydets (12-26 overall, 5-16 conference) to an 8-4 win over the Wildcats (13-26, 6-15). Martin also scored two runs.

In game two, Davidson scored runs in the first five innings to build an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 9-3 victory. Scott Thompkins, Jeff Cofer and Nate Shepperson had two hits each in the nightcap for VMI.

Ferrum took the second game of the two-game baseball series with top-ranked Methodist (N.C.) 9-6 in Dixie Conference action at Adams Field in Ferrum.

Chris Allen picked up the win with a complete game, 11 strikeouts and four earned runs. Six hitters had at least two hits for Ferrum, ranked No.10.

Senior pitcher Eric Harris (4-2) pitched his first complete game of the year, tossing a six-hitter against UNC Asheville as Radford claimed a 5-2 Big South Conference victory at Dedmon Center Park in Radford.

Kelly Dampeer (Northside) was 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Highlanders (14-20, 6-6). The Wildcats are 16-21, 5-7.

Washington and Lee freshman Bob Weston picked up his second win of the season and Graig Fantuzzi went 4-for-5 with five stolen bases and three runs scored in a doubleheader split with St.Mary's at St.Mary's, Md.

The Generals (9-10) lost game one 7-3. In game two, Washington and Lee won 10-5.

Senior Josh Herman (William Byrd) contributed four doubles and a home run to power Virginia Tech to a pair of wins over Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader in Blacksburg.

In game one, Jon Hand picked up his sixth win with a 7-4 decision over the Dukes (8-20, 2-10).

In game two, Matt Lichtel picked up the win for the Hokies (23-16, 10-2). Herman went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, finishing a 5-for-7 day with four RBI and three runs scored.

Radford men pick up lacrosse win

Radford's men's lacrosse team overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Ohio State 9-8 in Columbus, Ohio.

Radford (5-6) was led by Corey Fenley's three goals.

Washington and Lee senior Cinnie Logan scored three goals, helping the Generals (8-2, 5-0) to a 9-8 victory over Randolph-Macon in a women's lacrosse game in Ashland.

Virginia Tech's men's golf team finished first in the 11-team Atlantic 10 tournament at South Pointe Country Club in Pittsburgh, besting second place Temple by 26 shots.

The Hokies finished with a 54-hole total of 878. Sean Farrell finished second in the individual competition for the Hokies with a total of 219, six strokes back of Temple's Jim Sullivan.

Liberty's men's golf team is fourth and Radford's is fifth after the first round of the Big South conference championship in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Justin Jennings fired a 70 to lead the Flames to a 299 total over the par 72, 6,618-yard Colonial Charters course. Brian Hill's 73 paced the Highlanders to a 302.

UNC Greensboro leads the tournament by three strokes with a 290.

Brian Bond took first place in the Sport Men's Category for East Coaster's/Backstreet's Mountain Bike Team in the O'Hill Meltdown in Charlottesville.
