In 13 years of teaching elementary pupils, Mickey Faville has found that following a prearranged lesson plan doesn't always work to her pupils' advantage.
"I try to stay very flexible," she said. "If the children come up with an idea, we'll go with it sometimes, instead of with what I had planned. For instance, if I can conduct a class outside, I will."
Faville, who teaches all subjects at Salem's Carver Elementary, said she tries hard to make learning fun.
"I really enjoy myself, and I think that comes across to my students," she said.
"Mrs. Faville believes in you and lets you try until you get it right," said one of her nominators. "Mrs. Faville is really nice. She can see in the back of her head, it seems like," said another.
Faville said she especially enjoys working with fifth-graders because of their independence and ability to think for themselves. "They're able to take the writing process and go with it," she said.
Married and the mother of a grown son and two daughters who attend Virginia Tech, Faville is a graduate of Roanoke College and holds a master's from Tech. She enjoys reading, hiking and playing with her dog, Sunny.
