More than 300 people attended the Blacksburg High School Athletic Boosters Club's recent "Car Party," which raises money to support athletic teams and facilities.

The club gave away a Mazda MX-3 sports car, donated by Holiday Ford-Mazda in Blacksburg, and raised enough money to retire the remaining debt on the new concessions stand and restroom facilities at Bill Brown Stadium.

Jody Hershey, director of the New River Health District, won top fund-raising honors in the 1996 Heritage Buick/Pulaski Lock-Up to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Hershey raised $1,286 out of the total $8,500. Harry Jennings, records supervisors at American Electric Power, was second with $1,004. Third was the Rev. Michael Blouse, of Highland Park Community Church, with $915.

The proceeds will help area muscular dystrophy patients, providing a monthly clinic, a support group, wheelchairs and wheelchair repairs, diagnostics and therapy evaluations.

Teens Helping Teens at Christiansburg High School kept traffic officers in front of the school warm during their winter duty. The teens provided the officers, who direct traffic on busy North Franklin Street near the high school, with hot chocolate on Wednesday and Thursday mornings in January, February and March.

The group tries to do something special for the town Police Department each month.

Dayspring Christian Academy's Hi-Y club recently made its second visit to patients at Blacksburg's Heritage Hall.

Club members visited about 30 patients, giving them bud vases with flowers donated by local florists.

Donating flowers were Aimee's Classic Flowers, Blacksburg Florist, The Emporium and Wade's Floral Shop.
