"Justice in the Coalfields," an Appalshop documentary on the 1988 strike against Pittston Coal Co. in Southwest Virginia, will have its regional premiere at 7:30 p.m. April 23 in the Virginia Highlands Community College theater and be shown again at 7:30 p.m. April 24 at the Paramount Center in Bristol. Admission is $3.
Director Anne Lewis Johnson will discuss the making of the film at the first showing. The film follows the United Mine Workers strike's social, cultural and economic impact on coalfield communities.
Hundreds of state troopers are shown escorting replacement workers through picket lines. Union members, their families and supporters are shown responding with mass civil disobedience including the blocking of roads to and from Pittston coal plants, resulting in more than 4,000 arrests.
