VETERAN SPORTS REPORTER DIES IN COVINGTON

Emory Wayne Brackman, sports editor for the Virginian Review in Covington, died of a massive heart attack Sunday morning. He was 53.

Brackman was sports editor for the newspaper for 24 years. He graduated from Covington High School and authored a weekly column on local high school sports. In 1974, Brackman was honored as an outstanding alumnus of Covington High School.

Brackman also worked for several years at WKEY radio station in the Covington area, where he was known as the voice of the Cougars.

Brackman also was an ordained minister. He served as the pastor of Dunlap Christian Church in Crows for 26 years. He was involved in numerous community activities, most notably fund raising for the Virginia Heart Association, and was recently honored for his 25 years of service to that organization.

``He was always a consummate professional,'' said Johnny Gazzola, longtime public relations director of The Homestead in Hot Springs. ``We worked together for 35 years. He and I were close and he always loved sports.''

Brackman is survived by his father, Clate; a brother, Jim; his wife, Clinda Joy; and two sons, Jonathan, a student at the University of Tennessee, and Stephen, a student at Covington High School.

The funeral service will be held at First Christian Church in Covington on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The interment is at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
