FRANKLIN COUNTY TAX HEARING TONIGHT

The public is invited to speak its mind tonight at a hearing on Franklin County's 1996-97 budget and tax rates.

The hearing is set for 7:30 in the Benjamin Franklin Middle School auditorium.

There are no proposed tax increases.

The proposed budget total is $54.3 million, about 2 percent larger than the 1995-96 budget of $53.4 million.

The county estimates about $1 million in new revenue this year, County Administrator Macon Sammons said.

The major portion of the budget will go to education, and supervisors and the School Board are still haggling over how much money schools should get.

The School Board asked for $37.8 million, which includes $1.7 million in new local money.

The supervisors have discussed giving the schools either $1.2 million or $1.06 million in new funds, as well as a possible $300,000 capital-improvement allotment to finance several school roof repairs.

The board has scheduled an April 25 meeting to take final action on the budget and tax rates.
