GLENVAR MIDDLE TAPS PRINCIPAL

For the next two months, Michael Crowder will have two jobs and divided loyalties.

Crowder, assistant principal at William Byrd Middle School, has been named principal of the new Glenvar Middle School, which will open in August.

He will remain at William Byrd until the school year ends in June, but soon will begin assembling a staff and preparing for the opening of Glenvar.

"I expect to be running back and forth between the two schools, but I don't think that will be a problem," said Crowder, a 26-year veteran of the Roanoke County school system.

Crowder, 53, has been assistant principal at William Byrd Middle since the school opened in 1988. He was a teacher at Cave Spring Junior High and William Byrd Junior High before becoming an assistant principal.

A Vinton native, Crowder is a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a master's degree in education from Virginia Tech.

Crowder said he accepted the Glenvar job because it gives him the opportunity to become a principal as well as develop a staff and organize a new school.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I couldn't turn down," he said.

Crowder said he doesn't anticipate problems in acquiring equipment and furniture, even though county voters defeated a bond issue last week that included $1 million for equipment for the Glenvar school.

He said School Board member Marion Roark, who represents the Glenvar area, has assured him the school will have equipment. "I have faith in her," he said.
