Barter premiere
ABINGDON - Barter Theatre will present the premiere of a new play, "The Tie That Binds" by Frank Lowe, as its first production in its recently-renovated building starting Friday.
"It was important to us to reopen the theater with a play that is not only set in Southwest Virginia, but was written by a native of this region who is also an alumnus of Barter," said Artistic Director and Producer Richard Rose.
The play is set in the coal-mining camp of Roda from 1936 to 1942, centering on the entrance of the miners' union into the Appalachian coalfields and how it unites and divides one family.
"There really was a coal-mining camp named Roda near Appalachia, Va., in Wise County," Rose said. "The family story is tied into the true-to-life drama of early union organizing and the mechanization of the mines. The play gives us vivid impressions of life in the mountains in that time period, and realistically portrays the people with a great story that has universal appeal to audiences anywhere in the United States."
Work has been underway on the building renovation and expansion since Dec. 3. Prior to all performances Friday through Sunday, refreshments will be served in the lobby for those attending. Reservations are available by calling 1-800-368-3240.
