KIWANIS of Roanoke has always performed civic service, but on Saturday, the 76-year-old organization will test its mettle at food service.
From 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., on the lower level of Towers Shopping Center (Brandon access road), members will flip flapjacks to raise funds.
"Three or four years ago, we had several different projects going. But we wanted one good one for all to participate in," explained Robert E. Brailsford, Kiwanis of Roanoke's president.
His brainchild, Pancakes by Kiwanis, gives all club members a chance to sell tickets, cook or serve.
"Feeding them [the community] is a service ... so that's our community service," joked Jim Bowen, co-chairman with Jerry Strayve of the fledgling event.
The flapjack free-for-all, which the club hopes will be held yearly, will be ably overseen by Eric Danielsen. He thinks he was dubbed Head Chef for the Day because he once managed a McDonald's - and he knows how to quickly and efficiently cook for and feed large crowds. Plus, when the pace is not too hectic, he can make "smiley-face" pancakes the way his mom used to do it, with the faces baked right into the cakes.
The men anticipate selling 4,000 to 5,000 tickets to the 12-hour fund-raiser. They estimate that they will actually feed about 3,000 visitors; other tickets will be given to needy people and organizations that could not afford admission.
During the day, on seven hot griddles, Kiwanians will prepare 1,400 pounds of pancake mix and 1,200 pounds of sausage and drizzle them with 160 gallons of syrup. To wash it all down, they'll set up 50 gallons of orange juice, plus coffee, milk and other beverages, all donated or discounted by 26 corporate and private sponsors.
The sponsors make it possible for almost all proceeds to be used for the club's roughly 40 service projects for senior citizens, children and youth, and the community at large.
A pancake plate, at $4 for adults and $2 for children 10 and younger, will include an order of pancakes, two sausage patties, syrup or strawberry topping and a beverage on the initial pass through. After that, diners may have unlimited helpings of pancakes and beverage.
"So, yes, you could spend $4 and stay and eat all day," Bowen said.
At 2 p.m., an auction is planned that will include a sponsor-donated television, a woman's ring and seasons tickets to the Roanoke Express. Throughout the day there will be contests and prizes.
The men hope that Pancakes by Kiwanis will be a hit and join the club's popular Travelogue series as a major fund-raiser. Last year, the club's 240 members contributed more than 15,000 volunteer hours and $38,414 to local service projects.
While only the basic recipe from the back of Harris Teeter's President's Choice pancake mix box will be cooked on Saturday, you might try some of the accompanying recipes at home. The recipes were submitted by club members who hope eventually to use them in a fund-raising cookbook.
Pancake tickets are available at Harris Teeter in the Towers Shopping Center, from Kiwanis of Roanoke members or at the gate.
Tables, chairs and tents will be set up. So come rain or come shine, come hungry. Kiwanis of Roanoke will be at your food service.
