'Father of the Bride'
WYTHEVILLE - "Father of the Bride," a play by Carolyn Franche twice made into a movie, will be performed here at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday by the Evansham Players in the George Wythe High School auditorium.
The 16-member cast is directed by Jim Coen. The play will be performed again at 8 p.m. April 26 and 27.
Tickets are $6 general admission and $5 for students and those over 65 years of age. They will be available at the door or in advance by calling Linda McElroy at 223-1955.
The script has been updated for this production. The first movie version came out in 1950, with Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett as the parents of bride-to-be Elizabeth Taylor. They all repeated their roles the following year in "Father's Little Dividend." Both movies were recently remade by Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, with the title of the second changed to "Father of the Bride II."
Entries sought
ABINGDON - Entries are being accepted for the 44th annual Creative Writing Contest of the Virginia Highlands Festival in August.
Cash awards for novel entries are $100, $75 and $50. Awards in all other adult categories are $50, $35 and $25 and, for youth categories, $25, $20 and $15.
All entries must be postmarked by May 15 with a $5 fee for adult entries and $2 for youth. Rules and entry blanks can be obtained by writing: Virginia Highlands Festival 96-05, Box 801, Abingdon, Va. 24212 or calling 623-5266.
Adult categories are short-short story (under 2,000 words), short story (under 6,000 words), novel (120 pages or more), essay and poem. The two youth categories, story and poem, will be judged in four groups: ages 6-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18.
The awards will be presented in August during the festival.
