AWARD IS PAR FOR COURSE FOR VARNEY

Former Glenvar High School standout Nick Varney picked up rookie of the year honors as North Carolina-Greensboro won the Big South Conference men's golf title Tuesday at Colonial Charters Golf and Country Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Varney also was named to the all-conference team.

Varney, a former Timesland Athlete of the Year, finished tied for fifth overall at 227 as the Spartans won the tournament by 19 strokes. Coastal Carolina, which started the day in fifth place, finished second at 911 and Charleston Southern was third at 913.

Brian Lipps shot a 230 to finish 13th individually, and former Northside High School standout Brian Hill placed 20th at 233 as Radford finished fifth. The Highlanders shot a 930.

In other sports news in the region:

Radford University overcame wet weather and Elon to win for the seventh time in eight baseball games, prevailing 12-4 in Radford.

Eric Hungate drove in four runs for the Highlanders, who had to wait out a rain delay of 1 hour, 38 minutes. Chris Carr (William Byrd High School) drove in two runs and Kelly Dampeer (Northside) scored twice for Radford (15-20). Elon is 27-16.

Radford University's softball team closed its regular season with a pair of losses to Marshall in Radford, falling 3-1 and 10-0.

Despite the losses, the Highlanders (33-22) have set a school record for single-season victories in any sport. They will be seeded sixth when they begin play in the Big South Conference tournament at 3 p.m. Friday against third-seeded Coastal Carolina in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Radford University golf team will hold its inaugural Highlander Spring Fling outing Saturday at Draper Valley Golf Club.

The format is a four-man competition based on the Stableford scoring system. The cost is $50 per player, with all proceeds going to the Highlanders' golf program. To enter, call coach Dr.Steve Ames at (540) 831-5329.

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team signed Ashley Ellis of Sherman, Conn., to a grant-in-aid. Ellis was a two-time all-league selection as a defender at Brookefield (Conn.) High School.

East Tennessee State shot a final-round 315 to win its second consecutive Southern Conference golf championship at Stoney Creek Golf Club in Greensboro, N.C. The Buccaneers finished at 898 and Marshall was second at 922. VMI finished last, at 1042.
