ROANOKE CITY SCHOOLS have announced the winners of the 1995-96 PTA Reflections contest, which encourages creative expression in literature, music, photography and visual arts. This year's theme is "Just Open Your Eyes and See ..." The first-place winner in each category will advance to district competition. The winners, by grade level are as follows:

Preschool through second grade for literature - Aaron Fallon of Fishburn Park, first place; Elizabeth McLaughlin of Fishburn Park, second; and Beth Levy of Crystal Spring, third.

LOUISE TEMPLE FORSYTH, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Logan Forsyth of Roanoke, recently won the second-highest-level art award in the 1996 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Forsyth, a senior at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, won a Silver Key for an oil pastel.

THOMAS VITOLO, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard F. Vitolo of Roanoke, was named to the fall term high honor roll at Kent School, where he is a senior. He also has been awarded early admission to Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

NATASHIA SKELLINGTON, a senior at William Byrd High School, has been awarded a Leadership Activities Scholarship at Barton College in Wilson, N.C.

Skellington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Skellington, will enter Barton in the fall.

BRIAN SUTTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Sutton of Vinton, recently won first place in the Veterans of Foreign Wars "Voice of Democracy" essay contest. Sutton is a junior at William Byrd High School, and his entry, "Answering America's Call," was sponsored by Vinton VFW Post No.4522.

THE GENERAL JAMES BRECKENRIDGE CHAPTER, Daughters of the American Revolution, has announced the winners of its 1995-96 Good Citizen Award. The award, given to high school seniors, is based on dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

The winners are: Leroy Norman Lark, son of Barbara Sanders, Lord Botetourt; Jennifer Rebecca Vermillion, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert L. Vermillion, North Cross School; Nathan Kyle Musselman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Musselman, Patrick Henry; and Suzette Leigh Leonard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Leonard, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools.

KELLY ROSENBERGER, a senior at Patrick Henry High School, recently made the viola section of the All-State Orchestra after an audition at James Madison University. Rosenberger, daughter of Russell and Eula Rosenberger, also is a member of the Roanoke Youth Symphony.

TAMMI WOODEN, daughter of P.E. and Sharron Wooden, recently received a $400 scholarship from the Roanoke-based Theta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators. Wooden, an honor graduate of William Fleming High School, attends Virginia Tech, where she is majoring in Spanish and elementary education.

ROANOKE CITY SCHOOLS announced that six Roanoke middle school teachers were among 20 educators selected to participate in Blue Ridge Public Television's PBS Mathline. The teachers are: Barbara Smith and Bonnie Simmons from Ruffner; Blair Buehler and Tom Cushing from Addison; and Terry Bigler and Eva Jirout from Madison.

The project allows teachers to interact with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics through on-line discussion.

LATASHA JUANEL SUGGS, a senior at William Fleming High School, is a semifinalist in the National Beta Club Scholarship Program. She placed in the top 273 of the 783 students competing. Suggs is one of 12 Virginia students to get the honor and is eligible to become a finalist.

Patrick Henry winners are: Yaron Rachlin, first place, International Marketing Manual; Chris Duncan, first place, Food Marketing; Kia Price and Jaime Brooks, delegates.

Those from Fleming are: Nicole Paxton, Shauna Walker and Kara Jones, third place, Civic Consciousness Project; Nicole Paxton, DECA student Merit Award; Terrence Williams, delegate.

ROLAND E. COOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL has announced the names of students who received state recognition for their participation in the National Career Development program. The program promotes career development through poster making and poetry writing.

The winners are:

HILLS DEPARTMENT STORE named several Roanoke-area students as Outstanding Citizens for the months of January and February. Its Outstanding Citizen program recognizes and rewards students' academic and personal accomplishments to help build their self-esteem. Each student receives a certificate of achievement and coupon for a free item at Hills' Snack Express.
