Vinton names town treasurer
Vinton has selected an Iowa native with 20 years experience in municipal government to be its next town treasurer.
Shona Ringgenberg was appointed to the post last week by Vinton Town Council.
Ringgenberg, 50, served as a clerk and in management positions in three municipalities in Iowa.
She moved to the Roanoke Valley in September when her husband, Dennis, was transferred to this area by Yokohoma. The couple has three sons, one of whom, Kevin, is attending Virginia Western Community College.
In her new post Ringgenberg is filling a vacancy created by the resignation of Joan Furbush who moved to New Zealand in March.
Local Colors event set for Saturday
Center in the Square and Downtown Roanoke Inc. will sponsor their annual Local Colors celebration Saturday in downtown Roanoke. The event will feature more than 30 different ethnic and cultural groups including those from Roanoke's four sister cities, through dance, music, arts and crafts and food.
A parade traveling down Jefferson Street will start the celebration at noon followed by the opening ceremonies outside Center in the Square and stage presentations including dancing, music and karate. A fashion show featuring the costumes of various cultures will be held at 3 p.m. on the outdoor stage.
The event also includes storytelling, a kite workshop at the History Museum and a drawing for prizes including a trip to Cancun, Mexico.
A $2 passport to the celebration may be purchased at Center in the Square, Gallery 3 on the City Market, or any of the five locations of Martin Travel.
Free immunizations offered in Roanoke
The Roanoke Health Department will hold four free child immunization clinics as part of National Infant Immunization Week April 21-27.
* Tuesday: Belmont Presbyterian Church, 1005 Ninth St. S.E., 8 a.m.- noon and 2-4 p.m.
* Wednesday: Roanoke Health Department, 515 Eighth St. S.W., 7 a.m.-10 a.m.
* April 25: Belmont Presbyterian Church, 1005 Ninth St. S.E., 8 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m.; and Roanoke Health Department, 515 Eighth St. S.W., 3-6 p.m.

Kiwanis Club cooks pancakes at Towers
The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke will hold its "Pancakes by Kiwanis" fund-raising event Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Towers Shopping Center lower-level parking lot.
Money raised at the event will be used to fund the club's charitable activities for children, seniors and communities.
Tickets, which may be purchased from Kiwanis members and at the Towers Harris Teeter, cost $4 for adults and $2 for children.
