PULASKI TO TRY TO KEEP THE SHOPPING AT HOME

Pulaski business people will offer their products and services this summer on a database being created by the town's Economic Development Board, the Pulaski Business Alliance and the Southwest Virginia Governor's School.

Students at the Governor's School will create the program to store the information about what shops and businesses offer to be posted on the Internet. Work sheets will be distributed to businesses to list their names, telephone and fax numbers, hours, contact people and the top 25 items or services they offer.

A telephone number for further inquiries will be announced later. Members of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program will handle telephone inquires for further information.

The so-called "Pulaski Purchase" database program will list the products and services from the work sheets.

Economic Development Board Chairwoman Sybil Atkinson said the program may help keep shoppers in Pulaski County, or at least allow them to check out what is offered in the county before they go elsewhere to buy it. She said it is not only for merchants but professional people such as doctors and lawyers, too.

When someone needs a tire, new glasses, a particular gift or anything else, she said, they will be able to call the number and find out whether it is available locally before they go elsewhere to find it.
