The New River Valley has spring cleaning fever. Broomin' & Bloomin.' Cleanin' 'n' Greenin'. Both Radford and Montgomery County have tongue-twistin' titles for taking time to tackle the task of cleaning up their communities.
The Montgomery County Improvement Council's annual Broomin' & Bloomin' Cleanup will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine. All volunteers get a T-shirt and can enjoy a free picnic at the end of the day. The celebration includes music, food and door prizes. Last-minute questions? Call Linda Crable at at 382-5793.
Last year, more than 4,000 volunteers collected 383,000 pounds of litter. More than 180 miles of roadside, five river banks, 15 school sites and 17 illegal dumps were cleaned up. Christiansburg and Blacksburg Adopt-A-Spot groups cleaned more than 80 adopted areas. Twenty-five Adopt-A-Highway groups cleaned 53 miles of roadways.
In addition to all that tidying, volunteers found time to plant 1,600 trees to promote reforestation and wildlife habitat development.
Radford's weeklong spring cleanup, Cleanin' 'n' Greenin,' continues through Saturday. Residents and groups are encouraged to choose a site that needs sprucing up, notify the city, and tackle the job this week.
