JIM DRUCKENMILLER is charged with malicious wounding by mob after a March 21 fight.
Jim Druckenmiller, Virginia Tech's starting quarterback, was arraigned Thursday in Blacksburg General District Court on a charge of malicious wounding by mob in connection with a March 21 fight outside a Blacksburg bar.
Druckenmiller, who was charged and arrested by Blacksburg police on Saturday and was freed when he posted a $5,000 secured bond, wasn't present at the arraignment. Druckenmiller, a fourth-year junior from Northampton, Pa., was represented by his attorney, James Hutton of Blacksburg.
The hearing in the case has been set for 3 p.m. May 9.
Former Tech linebacker George DelRicco was arrested in March and charged with assault and battery in connection with the fight, which police said left one man with two black eyes and a broken nose and another man with fractures around one of his eyes.
Christopher Bishock, 25, of Blacksburg was arrested along with DelRicco and charged with malicious wounding.
Police said the fight occurred after a shouting match among Druckenmiller, DelRicco and Bishock and four other people leaving the bar around 1:30 a.m.
According to police, Shawn D. Elko, a 20-year-old Tech student, was attacked from behind and punched and kicked repeatedly. Jesse Phillips, a friend of Elko and a fellow Tech student, was attacked when he attempted to break up the fight, police said.
Sources say Druckenmiller was instructed ``to go on home'' by police when they arrived at the fight scene. But further investigation by the police led to Druckenmiller's arrest 13 days after the incident.
Druckenmiller, when contacted Thursday, said he wasn't at liberty to discuss specifics of the case.
``When it's all over,'' he said, ``believe me, I'm going to put out a huge press release telling my side of the story.''
