BRIEFLY PUT ... WILL THE KIDS BE CARRYING?

* LITTLE girls - possibly giggly, possibly squealy - may invade your workplace next week. Be kind and patient: Thursday is ``Take Our Daughters to Work Day,'' an annual event sponsored by the Ms. Foundation.

The purpose is to remind young girls that they have many career options. Sadly, such reminders are still necessary. Girls get less attention than boys in school, research continues to show, and are encouraged less by teachers to strive for challenging jobs and professions. When they grow up, they may be too willing to settle for lower-skill jobs that waste their full potential - and the nation's human resources.

But another reminder for little girls: Whatever job interests you - doctor, firefighter, lawyer, scientist, president of the United States - your work begins now, with your education. If you go to work with Mom or Dad next Thursday, make it an educational experience, not an excuse to skip school.

* GEORGIA lawmakers have voted themselves the right to carry concealed guns into places where other residents of that state legally can't: schools, churches and the state Capitol. This was necessary, says Georgia Rep. Jay Snow, because there are ``crazy people out there'' who might attack those who make the laws.

We worry, too, about the ``crazy people out there.'' And we worry more than we used to, because it's so much likelier these days that, crazily, the crazies are armed to kill. For that, thank state legislatures, including Virginia's, that keep liberalizing concealed-weapons laws.
