Pulaski businessman Hiawatha Nicely is stepping down from his new position as the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance's executive director less than a month after he took the job, a source confirmed Friday.
Few details were available Friday, including when he made the decision and why. No one would confirm or deny whether Nicely was indeed stepping down on the record but two people affiliated with the regional marketing group said there likely will be a public statement made Monday.
"[Nicely] needs to make a statement on Monday," said alliance President-elect Danny Hardy, who would not comment further.
Nicely was out of town Friday and could not be reached for comment. Current alliance President Barry Evans also could not be reached for comment.
The alliance is a nonprofit regional marketing agency that includes Radford and Montgomery, Pulaski, Floyd and Giles counties. It had been without an executive director since August when Franklyn Moreno left the top post to start his own business after a disagreement over a changing job description.
Nicely, who has been running his own consulting company in Pulaski, was formally named the new executive director April 2 during a news conference at Virginia Tech's Corporate Research Center. He was chosen from a pool of 70 applicants, only 26 of whom were from Virginia.
Nicely, a former corporate executive vice president at Magnox Inc., was the only Virginian out of the the six finalists.
