NEWCOMER, Leona Plogger, (Mrs. John W.), 94, of Lexington, died Friday, April 19, 1996, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Newcomer was born August 18, 1901, in Rockbridge Baths, a daughter of the late James William Plogger and E lla Miller Plogger. She was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, the Fairfield and Rockbridge Baths Senior Citizens. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, William P. and Lou Newcomer, Carl W. and Juanita Newcomer, both of Lexington; four granddaughters, Janice A. Newcomer, Raleigh, N.C., Nancy Newcomer Coffey, Buena Vista, Nicole R. Fitzgerald, Staunton, Krystal M. Campbell, Edgewood, Md.; two stepgrandsons; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, 1996, at the graveside in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Robert C. VanGilder officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.

OWENS, William Stuart, 69, of Snowville, passed away Friday, April 19, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Monday from the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.

PAINTER, Robert D., 67, of Roanoke, died Thursday, April 18, 1996, at his residence. Robert was a native of Pulaski, and a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, Class of 1951. Upon his graduation from the Academy he entered the U. S. Air Force, having served in the Far East during the Korean War. He was a co-pilot on B-29s and flew 13 combat missions over Korea. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1955 and worked for the Norfolk-Southern Railway until his retirement. As a member of First Presbyterian Church he served as an elder, deacon, and teacher of the McClanahan Bible Class. He was also a member of the Military Order of World Wars and served as historian. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Irene Painter; and his brother, Richard M. Painter. Surviving are his wife, Jenny L. Painter; sons and daughters-in-law, Jon and Pam Painter, Edwin and Susan Painter; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Scott Petty; grandchildren, Heather, Tyler, and Anna Painter, Victoria Petty; brother, Joseph M. Painter, Albany, N.Y. A memorial service will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church, 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 22, 1996, with Rev. Robert D. Smith and Rev. Phillip West officiating. Interment will be private. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Organ Completion Fund, Presbyterians for Habitat for Humanity, or your favorite charity. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

PARKER, Giles B., Jr., 70, of Daleville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 18, 1996, at his home. He was the owner of Parker's Seafood and was a former Virginia State Trooper. Mr. Parker was an active member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church and had served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Parker, Daleville; daughter and son-in-law, Vickie P. and Marty Martin, Roanoke; sons and daughter-in-law, Glenn B. and Sharon A. Parker, Daleville, Chris R. Parker, Daleville; four grandchildren, Ashlee and Whitney Martin, Brooke and Alex Parker ; mother, Mrs. Hona S. Parker, Troutville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert``Bobby"" and Alma Parker, Roanoke, Billy Joe Parker, Monroe, N. C., Jimmy and Jean Parker, Gainesville, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and James Firebaugh, Roanoke, Beverly Parker, Troutville, Barbara Sue and Gale Hurst, San Jose, Calif. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Troy B. Webb and the Rev. Walter L. Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Oakey's North Chapel after 12 noon Saturday, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

RAKES, Virgie S., 100, of Stuart, formerly of Franklin County, died Thursday, April 18, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday, Moody Funeral Home Chapel, Stuart.

SHREWSBERRY, Robert W. 58, of Radford died Thursday, April 18, 1996, in a Roanoke Hospital. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Sue Shrewsberry, Tony and Dana Shrewsberry, Dublin; three grandchidren, Shawn, Amanda, Gena; a special aunt, Barbara Duncan; two uncles, Carl and Sidney Thompson. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday at White Rock Cemetery with Paster Steve Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Devilbiss Funeral Home.

TEATERS, Charles Allen, 72, of Chilhowie, died Friday, April 19,1996. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday at the Newberry Funeral Home.

VICKERS, William Richard Sr., 75, of Richmond, died Friday, April 19, 1996. Funeral 1 p.m. Monday at Woody Funeral Home Chapel, Parham Rd., Richmond.

WARD, Cynthia Ann 47, of Advance, N.C., died Thursday, April 18, 1996 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her loving husband, Russell; daughter, Alisa R.; son, Russ. D. Ward Jr., mother, Lucille McShane of Enid, Oklahoma; three brothers, Christopher, Leland, and Timothy Rudiger; and her sister, Teresa Darrow. Known to her friends as Cindy, Mrs. Ward was not only an exceptional wife, mother, and friend, but an accomplished equestrian as well. Her involvement to her community included, but was not limited to serving on committees for various organizations such as the Advance Garden Club, where she served as secretary. She also worked hard to help keep the Advance Fire Department solvent with her tireless support during fund raisers. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 20th at Vogler's Funeral Home in Clemmons from 2 to 3 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 1386-A Westgate Center Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27103

WHITFIELD, Frances Lucille, 51, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, April 19, 1996. She worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 15 years before retiring on disability. Survivors include her husband, Rev. Kirby Whitfield, Sr.; two daughters, Kim (Joseph) Ashford and Tamika Whitfield; three sons, Kirby (Angela) Whitfield, Jr., Sterling Whitfield and Rev. Charles (Carmela) Whitfield, all of Roanoke; her mother, Mamie Brincefield of Alabama; four grandchildren, Omni and JaVonte Ashford, Kristopher Whitfield and Shaquayshia Taylor, all of Roanoke; eight sisters, Etta Mae Alexander, Roanoke, Yvonne Woods of Alabama, Joyce Spivey of Nevada, Lorenzia Brown of Alabama, Claudine Thompson, Cynthia Vann, Myrtice Freeman, all of New York, and Jean Ingram of Alabama; two brothers, George Hayden of Texas and Wendell Hayden of Michigan; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morning Star Baptist Church. The Rev. Lee Lewis will officiate, with interment in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
