UVA DOWNS NO.1 TERPS IN LACROSSE

THE CAVALIERS advance to the ACC championship game by beating Maryland.

Tim Whiteley scored all three of his goals in the second quarter as third-ranked Virginia built a three-goal lead, and the Cavaliers held on for a 13-9 victory over top-ranked Maryland on Friday night in a semifinal of the ACC men's lacrosse tournament.

UVa (9-2) will meet fifth-ranked North Carolina, an 18-8 winner over Duke, in the championship game at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Klockner Stadium.

The Cavaliers held second-seeded Maryland (8-2) scoreless in the third quarter and led 12-4 after David Wren scored 2:38 into the final period. But the Terrapins scored five consecutive goals in a 51/2-minute span of the fourth quarter to close to 12-9 with 5:31 remaining. Andrew Whipple and Scott Hochstadt each scored twice in the run.

Third-seeded UVa withstood the challenge, overcoming a man-down situation, and put the game out of reach when Michael Watson scored with 31 seconds left.

Whiteley also had two assists in the game, tying him with Kris Snider (1975-78) as Virginia's all-time leader. Doug Knight, who scored the game's first two goals, finished with three and assisted on another goal for the Cavaliers.

Hochstadt led Maryland with three goals.

In the first semifinal, North Carolina midfielder Jason Wade scored six goals, tying the tournament record.

The Tar Heels (11-3) wasted no time against fourth-seeded Duke (5-6), scoring 16 seconds into the game. Top-seeded North Carolina led 8-1 after one quarter behind three goals and two assists from attackman Merrill Turnbull.

The Blue Devils scored three consecutive goals in the second quarter to pull to 9-4 at the half, but then went 26:25 without scoring as the Tar Heels scored eight times to lead 17-4 midway through the final quarter.

Wade's six goals tied three players, including Virginia's Knight, who scored six goals last year against Duke.

Attackman Mark Phillips added three goals and three assists for North Carolina. Jim Gonnella scored two goals for Duke.
