RADFORD MOCK DISASTER SET FOR SUNDAY MORNING

City residents won't hear the crash when it happens but they should expect a train derailment Sunday.

Actually, the "derailment" is a mock disaster drill coordinated by the Local Emergency Planning Committee and involving a variety of groups including police, fire, rescue, American Red Cross, Radford University, public schools, public works and Norfolk Southern Corp.

Chris Hubbard, a Radford firefighter, said the drill will begin about 11 a.m. and is an exercise the department holds every three years. However, this year's drill is more extensive in its scope of the organizations involved.

The disaster will be staged behind the Norwood Street area of Hardee's. Norfolk Southern and Crestar Bank and officials will set up detours. As a result, Norwood Street between Third and Grove avenues will be closed as well as all of Harrison and West Stockton streets.

All emergency crews will respond to the disaster site as if it were a real emergency, according to a news release.

Hubbard said the public is welcome to watch the exercise, but barricades will be set up to keep people away from certain areas for their own safety.
