Virginia Tech split an Atlantic 10 Conference baseball doubleheader with George Washington in Arlington on Saturday.
In the first game, the Hokies (25-19 overall, 11-3 conference) managed only five hits off Colonials starter Dennis Healy in a 3-2 loss. Freshman Chad Foutz (Franklin County High School) had two of the hits for the Hokies. Center fielder Brian Guiliana hit two solo home runs off of Tech Starter Jon Hand.
In the second game, the Hokies used a seven-run fourth inning and an outstanding pitching performance by Sean Hummel to earn the split, 7-2.
Hummel allowed only four hits to the Colonials (17-23, 7-7), struck out eight and walked one. Kevin Barker and Matt Reynolds (William Byrd) had two hits apiece for the Hokies. Barker also hit the 15th triple of his career, breaking David Dallas' school record.
In other baseball:
* Radford dropped the first game of a doubleheader with Winthrop 2-1 and saw the second game suspended by rain in Big South Conference play in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Highlanders (15-22, 6-7) got five hits off Eagles starter Mike Condon, who went the distance and struck out three. Chris Carr (William Byrd) drove in Radford's lone run with a single in the fourth. The second game will resume today with the Eagles (32-14-1, 9-4) ahead 2-0 in the top of the third inning.
* The baseball doubleheader between East Tennessee State and VMI in Johnson City, Tenn., was rained out. The two teams will play a doubleheader today.
SOFTBALL Hokies lose two at St. Joseph's
Virginia Tech dropped both halves of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader to St.Joseph's in Philadelphia.
The Hokies (14-28, 6-6) were led in the first game by Dawn Medina, who went 3-for-3 in the 6-1 loss. In the nightcap, the Hawks (30-10, 6-6) used a six-run third inning to defeat the Hokies 9-1.
* Radford was eliminated from the Big South tournament with a 3-2 loss to Winthrop in the losers' bracket.
LACROSSE Tech wins 4th straight game
The Virginia Tech women's team notched its fourth consecutive victory, defeating Ohio State 14-4 at Tech Park in the Hokies' final home game of the season.
The Hokies (7-5) were led by Suzy Funston's four goals and three assists. Ohio State is 4-2.
* The Washington and Lee women's team dropped a 15-10 decision to Frostburg State in Frostburg, Md.
The Generals (9-4) were led by Erika Snyder, who had three goals and two assists, and Cinnie Logan added four goals. Frostburg State (3-3) was led by Kim Frye's four goals and two assists.
* Sophomore Ali Oglesby scored eight goals to lead Roanoke's women's lacrosse team to a 19-7 victory over Davidson at Alumni Field in Salem.
The Maroons (10-2) also got a big game from Gayle Avery, who scored five goals. The Wildcats (5-7) were led by Sarah Hogan's three goals and one assist.
* VMI scored only one goal in the first half, but still came away with an 11-9 victory over Limestone College.
The Keydets (6-6) were led by Joe Brockman, who scored two goals and had five assists. Limestone's record dropped to 6-6.
Angler Dudley ties for 10th
James Dudley of Lynchburg finished in a tie for 10th place in the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship on the Mississippi River near Quincy, Ill. Dudley finished second in the Eastern Region behind Bill Corbin of Southbury, Conn., who won a berth in the BASS Masters Classic.
Dudley caught two fish weighing 5 pounds, 5 ounces. Corbin caught three fish weighing 6 pounds, 2 ounces in the three-day tournament.
Craig Schuff of Fort Worth, Texas, won the event with a three-day total of 14 pounds, 15 ounces. He also won a berth in the Classic and $15,000.
Others who won Classic berths were Kenny French of Harrison, Ohio; Donnie Cox of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Thomas Vickers of Salisbury, N.C. The top finisher in each of five regions earns a berth to the Classic. The competition of top amateur anglers pitted 49 fishermen from 46 states, Japan, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The BASS Masters Classic is Aug.8-10 in Birmingham, Ala.
* Omar Moneim won the shot put and javelin for the Washington and Lee men's team to lead the Generals to a second-place finish in the Royal Track Classic in Harrisonburg.
Moneim tossed the shot 41 feet, 111/4 inches and the javelin 160-71/4. W&L's Jason Callen won the the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16 minutes, 38.84 seconds.
Josephine Schaeffer helped the women's team to a third-place finish by winning the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:14.55. Schaeffer also finished second in the 1,500.
Roanoke finished fifth in the women's competition with 50.5 points. Amy Beck had second-place finishes for the Maroons in the shot put and the discus.
Christopher Newport won the men's competition with 172 points and Methodist won the women's title with 117.5.
* VMI placed third in the Southern Conference outdoor track and field championships in Johnson City, Tenn., with 113 points. The Keydets got three first-place finishes. Darrius Jackson won the long jump with a leap of 7.37 meters; Joe Dubose won the 400-meter high hurdles in 52.77; and the 4x100-meter relay team won in 41.55. Appalachian State won the competition with 138 points.
* Tommy McDonald (Salem) qualified for the main draw at a USTA satellite tournament in Elkin, N.C., on Tuesday by defeating David Verreker of Australia 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the USA Segment 1 in Mobile, Ala.
* Keno Shepherd of Roanoke finished second in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman at 105.5 pounds during the University National wrestling championships in Evanston, Ill. Shepherd, a William Fleming High School alumnus who has enlisted in the Army, will compete for Team USA from June 3-22 at a meet in South Korea.
