FOOTBALL Furrer on fire in WLAF

Quarterback Will Furrer passed for 273 yards and two touchdowns to pilot the Amsterdam Admirals to a 17-7 victory over the Dusseldorf Rhine Fire in a World League of American Football game at Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The Admirals' first home game of the season was watched by 8,492 fans in Amsterdam's Olympisch Stadion.

Furrer, a former Virginia Tech quarterback who played for the Houston Oilers last season, passed 14 yards to wide receiver Derek Hill for the game's first touchdown in the third quarter.

Furrer, who was 24-of-38, put together a magnificent 75-yard drive to settle the outcome. Furrer got two first downs on passes to Phillip Bobo, then found him for a 10-yard touchdown that gave Amsterdam a 10-point lead.

A Clemson University running back has been arrested on campus on a drug charge, police say.

Samuel C. Zanders, 19, of Arlington, Va., was charged by campus police Thursday after a resident adviser in Lever Hall reported smelling marijuana smoke, university Police Chief Lonnie Saxon said.

Zanders and Kelly L. McCarty, 18, of Marlboro, Md., were charged with simple possession of marijuana.

Zanders and McCarty posted $304 personal recognizance bonds and were released Thursday. Clemson head football coach Tommy West said he hasn't had a chance to talk to the parties involved.

West said he would decide early next week whether he will take any action.
