SIX RUNS AREN'T ENOUGH as Frederick rallies for an 8-6 Carolina League win.
A fireworks show was scheduled after the Salem-Frederick game Saturday night, but Frederick fans got a sneak preview of the display while the game was taking place, much to the chagrin of the Avalanche.
Salem watched the Keys rally from a six-run second-inning deficit to knock off the Avalanche 8-6 in a Carolina League baseball game before a packed house of 5,708 at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Avalanche (8-8) scored all six of its runs in the second inning. Pookie Jones started the uprising for Salem by singling with one out off Frederick starter Francisco Saneaux. Jones stole second and Mike Higgins walked. One out later, Jones scored on a passed ball by Frederick catcher Jim Foster, and after consecutive walks to Elvis Pena and Kyle Houser, Higgins scored the second run on another passed ball - one of three for Foster.
John Giudice, who extended his hitting streak to five games, smacked a two-run single to give the Avalanche a 4-0 lead and Nate Holdren followed with a two-run homer for a six-run lead.
Frederick (6-8) responded with a run in the bottom of the second, then scored four times in the third off Salem starter Matt Pool.
After loading the bases with no outs, Rick Short grounded out to score Eddy Martinez. Foster then doubled home two runs to cut the Avalanche's lead to two. Jim Isom's two-out double plated Foster to make the score 6-5.
The Keys took advantage of poor defense to tie the score in the fourth. Martinez singled with one out and Eugene Kingsale hit into a fielder's choice. Kingsale then stole second and took third when Higgins' throw went into center field. Kingsale came around to score when Giudice overthrew Steven Bernhardt trying to get him at third.
Frederick took a 7-6 lead in the seventh on Short's sacrifice fly and added an unearned insurance run in the eighth off Salem reliever Brian Rose to finish the scoring.
Pool (1-1) took the loss for Salem, going seven innings and giving up seven runs - six earned - on 10 hits. He walked one and struck out five. Michael Trimarco (2-0) got the victory, pitching three innings of one-hit relief. Trimarco and Alvie Shepherd combined to hold Salem to four hits in 7 1/3 innings of relief.
