Choir, bell concert
WYTHEVILLE - The Martin Luther Choir and Augsburg Bell Choir of Saint Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Md., will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
The performers are high school students belonging to the 2,300-member Maryland congregation. The choir leads regular services twice a month and on special occasions, while the bell choir plays for church and community events as well as worship services.
Admission is free. An offering will be received to defray tour expenses.
Fund-raising raffle
WYTHEVILLE - A fund-raising raffle is offering prizes of a 1996 Ford Explorer, a seven-day Caribbean cruise, a 46-inch projection television, a video camcorder, and an 18-inch satellite dish.
Tickets are $50 each, with proceeds going to the Wythe Arts Council for the Wytheville Chautauqua Festival, the Family Resource Center regional abuse shelter, and the C. Brock Hughes Free Medical Clinic.
The winner of the Explorer will have the option of taking $20,000 in cash instead. There are also five prizes of $250 in cash. Winners will be drawn June 23, the first night of the annual Chautauqua Festival.
Fine Arts directors
PULASKI - The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley has added four members to its board of directors.
They are Evelyn Aust, who has been active in the Gem City Iron Works business and was treasurer of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Women until recently; Nancy Ballenger, gifted and talented coordinator for the Pulaski County school system; Debbie Douthat, community outreach director for the New River Community College Division of Arts and Sciences, and Mary Wright, senior vice president/operations for Community National Bank.
Voter registration up
WYTHEVILLE - Voter registration is up by more than 7 percent in Wytheville and 5 percent in Rural Retreat for the May 7 town elections.
In Wytheville, 4,160 residents are registered to vote. In 1994, 1,283 people - a third of those registered then - cast ballots. Rural Retreat has 673 registered, with 318, or 49 percent of those registered in 1994, voting then.
Vice Mayor Jackie King is seeking re-election in Wytheville. Other candidates running for the two seats are Richard Phillippi, Charles Crockett and Pete Lawson.
In Rural Retreat, candidates David Chaplain, Larry Dunnigan, Betty Wingo, Rick Martin and Jim Lloyd competing for three seats.
Muslim lecture
BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's Muslim Student Association will sponsor a lecture on "Terror in the Holy Land: A Deeper Look at the Middle East Peace Process" at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Colonial Hall of Squires Student Center.
The speaker will be Iyad Hilal, the director of the Islamic Center of New York. He is an expert on the Islamic perspective on international treaties.

Free admission
CHRISTIANSBURG - The New River Health District is sponsoring New River Day at the Science Museum of Western Virginia in Roanoke 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
There will be no admission fee for New River Valley residents on that day. Admission is usually $5 for adults and $3 for children.
The event is in conjunction with the museum's "Body Tech" exhibit, an interactive way to explore the inner workings of the human body. The $400,000 exhibit features an enormous "heart pump" that moves simulated blood at the same rate as a real human heart.
The museum also has free blood pressure screenings and cholesterol testing for $10 and blood sugar testing for $2.
Fashion show
BLACKSBURG - New River Community College students will turn Virginia Tech's Schultz dining hall into Fashion Cafe on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. when they present "Fashion Blast from the Past: Retro Reruns," a fashion show featuring summer fashions from the 1960's and 70's.
Fashion and marketing students are presenting the show for the Fashion Coordination and Presentation class and the Promotions class. They are using area models and local businesses such as the YMCA thrift store and Fringe Benefit for the show as well as coordinating the music and lighting.
