Looking for new furniture? Whether you need to furnish a whole house or just want to update your living room with a few new end tables, you'll probably find what you need - at discounted prices - at the Spring After-Market Sale at the Hickory (N.C.) Furniture Mart.
The annual sale, which this year is May 3-5, always falls the weekend after the International Home Furnishings Market in neighboring High Point, so you're bound to find some terrific deals on showroom samples and factory overstocks. The Hickory Mart itself is open year-round, but you usually can find the best deals during the after-market sale, when showrooms take additional discounts and bring in new merchandise.
And you don't even have to lug your purchases home with you. The Mart will ship your furniture to your door, for a fee. And if you buy furniture from several different stores, you can consolidate your shipping into one order. Furniture delivered by the store will be uncrated and set up in your home by experienced movers.
Most stores at the Mart require a deposit of one-third to one-half the total purchase price when you place your order, so bring your checkbook. The balance is due when the furniture is ready to be shipped or delivered.
The Mart will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. The 70 showrooms cover 13 acres, so wear comfy shoes. Free maps and brochures are available at the visitors center on the first level of the Mart. There are two restaurants in the Mart, as well as a furniture museum and a gift shop.
