Ever wanted to make your own butter? Do you think it would be fun to learn how to quilt or weave dry flowers? How about calligraphy - a name for fancy writing like they used in Colonial times - wouldn't it be interesting to address birthday party invitations in that style?
Fourth-graders at Oak Grove Elementary School in Roanoke County will step back in time Friday when they present a Publik Times program in the school gymnasium.
"They'll be acting out and telling what they've learned all year long." said Diane Thompson, a fourth-grade teacher. Thompson's class and the other fourth-graders at Oak Grove have studied Virginia history this year.
They'll show what they know when they perform "Back to Williamsburg," a time-travel play, and demonstrate how to make 18th-century items such as quilts, samplers and yarn dolls.
The musical portion of the program will include performances of First of April, a Colonial line dance; The Ring Dance, an African folk dance; and patriotic songs.
On display will be photography of Colonial Williamsburg, a ships display and stenciling done by the pupils.
No program is complete without food, and there will be plenty. Parents of the pupils will be preparing and serving breads and cookies from the old days.
The program will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The public is invited.
